2July.Rape flowers blossom against the backdrop of dancing qingke barley in the fields. The Boinbori Mountain lying in the north guards the monastery like a reclining elephant.Golden tops of monastery buildings shine under sunlight. This may seem like a beautiful oil painting. But it is a true scene.
History.During the Tang Dynasty in China, the Tubo Kingdom was in its prime in present-day Tibet. At that time Sagya was merely a small town, which was so small that almost nobody knew of it.
In the 9th century,Buddhism suffered devastating opposition in Tibet, and the populace in Tibet rose in revolt.Buddhism retreated from the central part of Tibet. It was at this point of time, known in Tibetan history as “the dark period”.that the Kuansi family, belonging to the Nyingma Sect, continued to practice Buddhism in Sagya. In 1073,Qoigyaibo of the Kuansi family raised money to build the Gurong Monastery, the predecessor of the North Sagya Monastery,at the foot of the Boinbori Mountain. This ushered in a shining new period in Tibetan history.
Sagya energed as one of the most influential Buddhist sects in Tibet.Sapan Goinga Gyaincain was the 4th abbot of the Sagya Monastory, which was its main part, was renovated, attracting an endless flow of disciples.
Sapan Goinga Gyaincain met Godan, grandson of Genghis Khan,in prensent-day Lanzhou in 1247.They negotiated terms fot the Tubo to be incorporated into China. The Dynasty, then ruling China, appointed Pagba, nephew of Sapan Goinga Gyaincain.Imperial Tutor of Yuan Dynasty,to be in charge of the Buddhist affairs of the whole country.Pagba ordered construction of the Sagya South Monastery in 1268.With support from the Central Goverment, the Sagya regime was installed in Tibet in 1275.
Large Collections of Books. The Sagya Monastery has more than 44,000 volumes of books, including 4,500 volumes in Tibetan. They cover such fields as politics, society, history, law, religion, astronomy and astrology, and medicine. Most of them are related to religion, including Dangyur and Gangyur written in gold, silver or pearl power ink.The monastery also keeps eight volumes of pattra-leaf sutras, which are considered very rare. Most belong to the 8,000 Odes.Rectangular in shape, the largest measure 61 cm long and 6 cm wide, while the smallest is 8.3 cm long and 5.5 cm wide.Their covers bear relief patterns telling stories of Buddhist figures and events.
Behind the group of Buddha statues in the Sutra Hall on the first floor of the Lhakang Qenmo Hall of the south Monastery is a huge Sutra Shelf 60 meters long and 7 meters high. It is divided into 50 individual units containning giant books each covered with wooden planks. Each book is 1.5 meters long,50 cm thick and 30 cm wide.As they are heavy, they were transported here on the back of horses or yaks.Among these is Parba Gyaidongba covered with wood planks with four iron rings at the four corners for men to carry.
In addition, the Sagya Monastery also has collection of gold, silver, bronze and iron statues of Buddha, and the seals of authority bestowed by the Ming and Qing emperors.
