Tradruk Temple is located in Nêdong County of Lhoka (Shannan) Prefecture in the Tibet, about seven kilometres south of the county seat, Tsetang.It is one of the gelug sect monasteries.It was built in Sontzen Gampo period, has a history of more than 1300 years ago.It is said that princess wencheng stoped and practice Buddhism in the temple.
Tradruk temple is one of the first buddhist temple constructed in the tubo period.The original size is very small,only six doors, six columns and Zuglagkang.Later, the original building has three large-scale renovation and expansion.During the persecution of Buddhism under Langdarma and during the Mongol invasion from Dzungaria in the 16th century, the monastery was heavily damaged.In 1351, Tradruk was restored and enlarged; during the reign of the 5th Dalai Lama (1642–1682), the monastery got a golden roof and under the 7th Dalai Lama, it was further expanded. In the late 18th century, Tradruk is said to have had 21 temples.Tradruk temple today’s scale Laid the foundation in the 14th century.
Tradruk temple covers an area of 4667 square meters now,composed of three parts.The main building is Coqen hall, Coqen hall is 45 meters west-east length,29 meters north-south width,with 64 pillars and three main halls.Its form is similar as Jokhang temple.
According to legend, Princess Wencheng in order to build the Jokhang Temple, viewed the astronomical observations at night,found that the topography of the Tubo looks like a supine Raksasi.This would not be conducive to the tubo dynasty founding,have to bulid the temples in Roksasi’s limbs and heart .Hence, the Jokhang temple was built on the Roksasi’s heart,and Tradruk Temple was built on one of the Roksasi’s arms.
The most important treasure of Tradruk is a thangka embroidered with thousands of pearls which is said to have been made by Princess Wencheng herself. It depicts Wencheng as White Tara. The thangka is kept in the central chapel on the upper floor. It is one of only three thangkas made by Wencheng. The two others are in the reliquary stupa of the 5th Dalai Lama in the Potala Palace in Lhasa and in Xigazê.
